Use a correctly sized filter that fits the HVAC system, and check for a blocked return, visible moisture, duct damage, or a specific discharge of debris. EPA says routine duct cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems.
EPA says cleaning may be considered for substantial visible mold inside hard-surface ducts or HVAC components, vermin inside ductwork, or excessive debris released into the home from supply registers. Ask a provider to show and document the condition before approving work.
