Air filters can capture some airborne particles, but no residential HVAC filter removes every pollutant or guarantees relief from allergy symptoms. EPA recommends addressing pollutant sources and ventilation as well as using filtration as a supplement.
Choose a filter your system can use
MERV ratings describe a filter's ability to capture particles. A higher-rated filter may also restrict airflow if it is not compatible with the system. Check the equipment manual or ask an HVAC professional before changing filter type or rating, and replace filters on the manufacturer's schedule.

Whether you live near Larchmont, Ghent, or another Norfolk neighborhood, look for a poorly fitting or dirty filter, a blocked return, or a specific sign of moisture or duct damage. Duct cleaning should be based on documented conditions; EPA says routine cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems or improve air quality for the general population.
